July 2011 -- Celebrating Canada

Before we get to the main point of this column…which is to celebrate this great country we’re fortunate to call home, I’d like to address the postal strike which was a focus of Parliament in the final days before summer.

Throughout the later part of June, Canadians were impacted by the Canada Post work stoppage -- particularly seniors, small businesses and charitable organizations who depend on regular mail delivery.

To protect our economy and stand up for taxpayers, the Government acted with back-to-work legislation. During three days of around-the-clock debate and filibustering by the Opposition, I attended Parliamentary sittings and votes from midnight to early morning, and also slept in my Parliament Hill office as was required to be in proximity to the House of Commons for votes. I was pleased to do so, on your behalf.

I was encouraged to read the editorial in the June 16th edition of the Flamborough Review that recounted the many good things that people all over Flamborough are doing to lend a hand to others. Charity walks, bake sales, plant sales, car rallies, golf tournaments and more. It’s the season when thousands of dollars are raised for so many worthy causes. The editorial “Tip of the hat” was a breath of fresh air in a world too often dominated by attention-grabbing headlines and violence.

It’s the drive of the Canadian people and the community spirit exemplified in those acts of kindness that makes this country great. It’s no wonder that Canada has been selected as the number one place in the world to live, by the United Nations, no less than eight times since the 1990s – more than any other country in the world.

Having just celebrated Canada Day, the many reasons we’re all proud to be Canadian are top of mind. I’ve captured a “top 10” list of reasons in my Canada Day message this year. You can view it on my website at www.davidsweet.ca. However, I recognize that it’s impossible to capture the essence of Canada in just 10 good reasons and welcome your further suggestions throughout the year!

As we said in the election and as was reflected in the Throne Speech that opened Parliament on June 2, we want Canada to be the true north that is as strong and as free as it can be -- in every way that matters, the best country in the world. Canadians are united by the core values. We are honourable in our dealings, faithful in our commitments and loyal to our friends.

There is no greater example than the role the Canadian Armed Forces has played on the world stage when it mattered most. In the First World War we defined ourselves as a nation by taking on the tough, courageous battles that turned the tide. In the Second World War we fought unspeakable tyranny and liberated the Netherlands. In the Korean War our brave, young women and men stood with the world in defence of freedom, and in Afghanistan, we fought for the rights of young girls to education and opportunity, and also against terrorism and oppression.

With the transformative change taking place in North Africa and the Middle East today, Canada is there once again, with our allies, in protecting civilians in Libya. I’m proud of our troops this Canada Day and every day.

Whether you attended celebrations in our community or spent a relaxing day with family and friends, I trust that you enjoyed the day.

Canada is worth celebrating.
