December 2012 - Celebrating Community Leaders

In honour of the 60 years that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has been the sovereign of Canada, each MP was given 30 Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medals to award to deserving community leaders and volunteers throughout 2012.

This helped ensure that among the 60,000 recipients of these stunning medals, there would be people from every corner of the country who really exemplified the Queen’s model of community service and duty.

I took that to heart in selecting 30 civic-minded recipients from our communities. It was not an easy task as we are blessed with so many generous and talented people in our area. Detailed nominations from fellow citizens helped ensure the recipients truly represented the best of the best.

In September, I awarded the first nine medals in Waterdown. I hope you have read about these great individuals in my Fall newsletter. They were also recognized in the Flamborough Review at the time.

Since then, two additional ceremonies were held in Dundas and Ancaster on October 20th and November 24th respectively. While you may have already seen the photos of these medal recipients in the pages of this newspaper, please allow me to amplify the recognition.

While space doesn’t allow me to expound on the great works of each individual here, please watch for my next newsletter in your mailboxes before spring where I will publish an article that I trust will give you a glimpse into the community leadership and spirit that merited each of these civic-minded people receiving this high honour: (listed alphabetically)

As the holiday season approaches, Almut and I extend best wishes to all for a Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas and safe, enjoyable New Year’s celebration.

Highway 403 Improvements

November 5, 2012 – Families and businesses in the Hamilton area will benefit from major improvements to multiple bridges along Highway 403, thanks to a joint funding initiative.

The investment was announced by the Honourable Denis Lebel, Canada’s Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, and the Honourable Bob Chiarelli, Ontario Minister of Infrastructure and Minister of Transportation.

“Strengthening infrastructure is an important part of our government’s plan to create jobs, growth and long-term prosperity,” said David Sweet, Member of Parliament for Ancaster—Dundas—Flamborough—Westdale. “I'm particularly pleased with this investment because Highway 403 has played a vital role in the attractiveness of the Hamilton area for new and expanding businesses.”

“These upgrades will contribute to the local economy and help reduce congestion on this busy stretch of highway that connects workers with jobs, products with markets and travellers with destinations,” said Mike Wallace, Member of Parliament for Burlington.

“The improvements to these bridges along Highway 403 are welcome news to families and businesses in the Greater Golden Horseshoe,” said Ted McMeekin, Member of Provincial Parliament for Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Westdale. “The construction will create jobs, boost the local economy and improve the quality of life for families along this highway corridor.”

This Provincial-Territorial Base Fund initiative includes the rehabilitation of bridges on Highway 403, from Mohawk Road to Highway 2 at Duff’s Corners. This will ensure a smoother and safer commute for motorists. The governments of Canada and Ontario today announced a joint investment of up to $30.5 million in total eligible costs toward these improvements. These initiatives were identified in Ontario’s 2012-13 Capital Plan under the Provincial-Territorial Base Fund.

Earlier today, the governments of Canada and Ontario announced investments of up to $113.2 million and $111.2 million respectively, towards infrastructure initiatives across the province, including improvements to Highway 403.

Under the Building Canada Plan, Canada and Ontario have partnered to provide strategic funding for priority infrastructure needs. Through the Provincial-Territorial Base Fund, the Government of Canada is providing $175 million to strengthen infrastructure in Ontario.

MP Sweet Awarded Humanitarian Award

November 18, 2012 – David Sweet, MP and former Davenport MP Dr. Mario Silva were presented with Humanitarian Awards by the UJA Federation of Hamilton this afternoon for their years of work in challenging hate and antisemitism in all its insidious forms.

This work has taken place, and continues on today, in a variety of areas including: the Canadian Parliamentary Coalition to Combat Antisemitism, in global forums, and on the House of Commons Sub-Committee on International Human Rights.

This 2012 Holocaust Education Committee award is inscribed to MP Sweet for:

Distinguished contributions to his community and Canada as a passionate Holocaust and Human Rights champion dedicated to combating antisemitism and racism in the Service of Humanity.

“This is truly one of the greatest honours I have received in my years as an MP,” said David Sweet, MP for Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Westdale. “It is humbling to be recognized by people in your own community who are national leaders on this issue and who do so much themselves.”

The honour was bestowed at Temple Anshe Sholom in Hamilton, Ontario where the ribbon-cutting and opening ceremony for the Canadian Première of a special travelling exhibit entitled Art and Propaganda in Nazi-Occupied Holland & Anne Frank: A History for Today was taking place.

The exhibit was brought in from New York City by the Holocaust Education Committee of the UJA Federation of Hamilton, the Canada-Netherlands Friendship Association and Temple Anshe Sholom as part of Holocaust Education Week. The exhibit is open for public viewing until November 30th. Visit www.jewishhamilton.org for exhibition hours and details.

Dr. Silva is the incoming Chair of the Task Force for International Co-operation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research -- as Canada assumes leadership of this group for 2013.

November 2012 - Linc Remembered

An unrelenting advocate for Canada, a man who embodied the very best qualities of our nation, was lost with the passing of Lincoln Alexander.

The federal government recently introduced landmark pension reforms as part of the Jobs and Growth Act 2012 introduced in Parliament. These changes tackle the much-publicized issue of bringing the pension contribution rates for MPs, Senators and public servants more in line with the contribution rates of the private sector.

These are the most significant changes in public pension management in decades and underscore our continued commitment to returning to a balanced federal budget.

To lead by example, the MP pensions portion of the legislation was pulled out and passed unanimously by the House of Commons. Specifically, Members of Parliament will see their contributions rise to a 50-50% cost-sharing and the age at which a MP can begin collecting a full pension will also rise from 55 to 65.

We campaigned on this, and I’m proud to be part of the government that has made this change happen.

The changes to MP pensions will garner $29-million in combined savings by 2017. Once implemented in the Jobs and Growth Act 2012, the changes to the 420,000-strong public sector pension regime will bring total savings to $2.6 billion in taxpayer dollars, also by 2017.

An unrelenting advocate for Canada, a man who embodied the very best qualities of our nation, was lost with the passing of Lincoln Alexander.

Linc blazed a trail as the Member of Parliament for Hamilton West, a federal cabinet minister and one of the finest Lieutenant-Governors in Ontario’s history. But where he truly shined was in his ability to connect with people – particularly young people. He was a man of the people in his every day life. And that’s how he conducted himself as an MP and Lieutenant-Governor. To view my online memorial to Linc, please click here.

Linc truly made a difference in people’s lives. He was involved in so many causes for youth and the less fortunate.

In that vein, please allow me to encourage a couple of local youth groups who are doing great work in our community and who have contacted my office recently. The Routes Youth Centre, a youth drop-in and mentoring centre in Dundas, is having their annual fundraising rake-a-thon on November 3rd and 17th – contact to support their efforts.

Also this month, a group of Redeemer University College students are collecting new or good, used warm blankets for a local shelter. Drop off blankets anytime during November at the Student Life Office on the Redeemer campus (777 Garner Rd. East, Ancaster) or at Micah House in Hamilton (333 King St. East).

October 2012 -- Happy Thanksgiving

With Parliament back in full swing for the Autumn session, the Government of Canada remains focused on jobs and the economy -- particularly given the slow growth, fiscal challenges and worrisome economic signs that continue to haunt the United States and Europe.
