Elimination of Racial Discrimination |
|
March 21, 2013 -- Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination:
“On this day, I encourage all Canadians to fight against racial and ethnic discrimination whenever and wherever it occurs.
“We as a country do not tolerate any form of discrimination, and recognize the very real societal and economic damage that these attitudes cause to communities, families and individuals.
“The diversity that exists in Canada is something we cherish, for our nation has been greatly enriched by over 200 cultures that make up our country. Indeed, our reputation as a free and just country depends on our stance against practices such as racial discrimination, and we must always work hard to live up to that reputation.
“To this end, our Government will continue to work at home and abroad with our partners to combat racial and ethnic discrimination in all its manifestations.” |

March 11, 2013 -- Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement marking Commonwealth Day:
“Commonwealth Day is an opportunity to celebrate the fundamental values that form the foundation linking the 54 members of this historic organization. In an uncertain world, the Commonwealth must continue to stand for the principles of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law while also promoting good governance and development throughout the world.
“In the past year, the Commonwealth celebrated a major milestone by marking the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Head of the Commonwealth. We thank Her Majesty for her ongoing devotion and lifetime of dedicated service.
“In the coming year, we look forward to the implementation of the Eminent Persons Group (EPG) recommendations, which were adopted last December. We welcome the new Charter of the Commonwealth, which reflects key Canadian priorities including the protection and promotion of religious freedom and the need to oppose discrimination on any grounds. This advancement will enhance the relevance and effectiveness of the organization in the 21st century, and represents an important milestone for the Commonwealth as a whole. Senator Hugh Segal will continue his important work as Canada’s Special Envoy for the Commonwealth in the year ahead.
“Canada remains a strong supporter of the Commonwealth. We continue to be committed to the modernization of the organization and look forward to the adoption of a new strategic plan that reflects our values and maximizes the Commonwealth’s relevance so it can reach its full potential in advancing human rights, democratic reform and economic development.
“In this regard, Canada will continue to promote an active role for the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group in addressing challenges to democracy and human rights in Sri Lanka and the Maldives and in assisting the Commonwealth family.” |

International Women’s Day |
|
March 8, 2013 -- Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement to mark International Women’s Day:
“Today, I encourage all Canadians to recognize the tremendous achievements of women in Canada and around the world in promoting equality, peaceful development and in combating violence against women and girls.
“Canada’s theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is Working Together: Engaging Men in Ending Violence Against Women, which highlights the importance of engaging men in efforts to prevent such aggression, including playing a role in educating boys about healthy and equal relationships.
“Our Government supports grassroots organizations across the country for community projects aimed at ending violence against women and girls. These include initiatives addressing violence against women in four key areas: violence committed in the name of so-called ‘honour’; the trafficking of women and girls; women and girls in high-risk neighbourhoods; and engaging men and boys. Our Government has also been taking action by strengthening domestic laws against perpetrators of the most violent crimes and sex offenders who prey on our children. We have also taken several concrete measures to put the central focus of the criminal justice system back where it belongs, on the rights of victims.
“On the global front, Canada is playing a leadership role in the international campaign to prevent sexual violence against women and girls in conflict areas. For example, in October 2012, our Government announced $18.5 million to help support the fight against sexual and gender-based violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo. We are also working with international partners towards putting an end to early and forced marriage.
“On this day, we should all take the time to pay our respects to the exemplary women in our lives. Let us also redouble our efforts towards ensuring that women in all countries can pursue opportunities as equals and in safety.” |
