Prime Minister
Death of Rt. Hon. Margaret Thatcher

April 8, 2013 -- Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement today on the death of former British Prime Minister, The Right Honourable Margaret Thatcher:

“With the passing of Baroness Thatcher, the world has lost a giant among leaders.

“While many in positions of power are defined by the times in which they govern, Margaret Thatcher had that rarest of abilities to herself personify and define the age in which she served. Indeed, with the success of her economic policies, she defined contemporary conservatism itself.

“Her greatest achievements however, were surely on the world stage. Along with the late U.S. President Ronald Reagan, and His Holiness Pope John Paul II, she played a key role in the fall of the USSR. The era of peace and prosperity that followed the end of the Cold War must therefore rank as one of her great and lasting gifts to this generation.

Lady Thatcher’s leadership in time of conflict and during the generous peace she helped bring forth, was an example to the world. As a result, millions now live with the dignity and freedom that she envisioned for them, during the darkest moments of the post-war years.

“She well deserved to be known as ‘The Iron Lady’.

“Canadians knew Mrs. Thatcher well: she addressed Canada’s Parliament twice.

“I recall with pride her eloquent portrayal of the philosophical groundings of the principles that have - and I hope forever will - unite the British and Canadian peoples.

“’The ideals which our two countries share are the answer to all the doubters,” she said. ‘For centuries we have striven first to win, then to preserve, that freedom and justice without which life has neither dignity nor meaning.’

“New to my own duties as Prime Minister in 2006, she provided me wise and gracious counsel in London, the memory of which I will forever cherish.

“Laureen and I join all Canadians in saluting the proud life and legacy of Lady Thatcher.”

Yom HaShoah

April 7, 2013  -- Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement on Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day:

“On Yom HaShoah, Canadians stand together to remember the countless innocent people, including nearly six million Jewish men, women and children who suffered and died at the hands of the Nazis during the Holocaust.

“As we mark the liberation of the first Nazi concentration camp in Buchenwald, Germany, let us also pay tribute to all those brave souls who fought with the Jewish resistance during this dark period, and let us renew our own commitment to continue their fight against all forms of intolerance, discrimination and anti-Semitism.

“On March 5, 2013, Canada became the Chair of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA). As Chair, Canada is committed to an ambitious campaign to raise Holocaust awareness and fight anti-semitism at home and abroad. Canada will host a major IHRA conference in October in Toronto.

“The atrocities of the Holocaust betrayed the fundamental value of human dignity. We must never allow such unthinkable crimes to be forgotten or repeated.”

Easter 2013

March 31, 2013 -- Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement on the occasion of Easter:

“I would like to extend my best wishes to Christians in Canada and around the world as they gather with family and friends to observe Easter and the culmination of Holy Week.

“Easter is a time of renewal, and represents the triumph of good over evil and of hope over despair. It is also a time to show love, compassion, generosity and forgiveness.

“Today, let us reflect on the meaning of this special day, and think of how and every one of us can help others and better our communities in the year ahead.

“Laureen and I wish you and your families a most joyful and happy Easter.”

Passover

March 25, 2013 -- Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement to mark the beginning of Passover:

“On behalf of my family, I would like to send our best wishes to all those celebrating Passover in Canada and around the world.

“This evening, Jewish families and friends will gather around the Seder table to retell the story of the Israelites' Exodus from Egypt and to commemorate their move towards freedom.

“As we mark this celebration, we are reminded of the sacrifices that are still being made for freedom around the world. As Canadians, we are also reminded that the freedoms we cherish must never be taken for granted, and we renew our commitment to continue promoting freedom globally.

“I wish the Jewish community a peaceful and joyous Passover.”

PM speaks with Chris Hadfield

March 15, 2013  -- Prime Minister Stephen Harper today participated in a live video conference with Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield who recently became the first Canadian to command the International Space Station.

Prime Minister Harper also moderated a Q&A session with students between the ages of 8 and 12 from the Ottawa area and from the Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada. The event took place at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum in Ottawa.

“Canadians are tremendously proud of Chris Hadfield and all of his impressive achievements,” said Prime Minister Harper.  “He epitomizes how the citizens of our great country continue to push the frontiers of exploration and knowledge.  His teaching and sharing via social media are inspiring young people, like those joining me today, to dream big and achieve those dreams.”

As head of the International Space Station, Commander Hadfield is responsible for maintaining the health and safety of the crew, and for keeping the space station productive and functioning properly.  Some of these duties include engineering, vehicle safety and the supervision of over 100 science experiments; many with the potential to enhance the quality of our lives here on Earth and further enhance the strength and expertise of the Canadian scientific community.

Commander Hadfield is no stranger to the vast expanse of space. He is the only Canadian to have boarded Mir, the Russian Space Station; the first Canadian to operate the Canadarm in orbit; the first Canadian to perform a spacewalk—when he attached Canadarm2 to the ISS; and now, the first Canadian to Command the International Space Station.

Chris Hadfield became the first Canadian Commander of the ISS on March 13, 2013, taking the helm from U.S. Commander Kevin Ford (NASA). This is Commander Hadfield’s third mission to space.  He launched to the Station on December 19, 2012, and is scheduled to stay aboard until May 13, 2013, when he is due to return to Earth in a Russian Soyuz capsule.
