MP Sweet elected Chair of Parliament’s Ethics Committee

One of only four Opposition-chaired Standing Committees at a critical time when Trudeau government ethics scandals are intensifying

October 8, 2020, Ottawa, Ont. –Flamborough-Glanbrook MP David Sweet was elected by his colleagues to serve as Chair of the Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics. The committee met this morning to re-constitute following the summer prorogation of Parliament.

By parliamentary tradition and to help assure oversight, the Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics is one of only four committees that must be chaired by an Opposition MP.

“It’s an honour to be asked by colleagues to guide the work of this Standing Committee at this important time in the history of our Canadian parliamentary institutions,” said Sweet. “Never before have ethics scandals, including the WE scandal, so significantly threatened the confidence Canadians have in the federal government. We will work tirelessly to ensure these issues are exposed.”

Sweet has served in a variety of roles in Parliament since being first elected in 2006:

  • Chair and Member, Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology – 2010 to 2015
  • Chair and Member, Standing Committee on Veterans’ Affairs – 2006 to 2010
  • Vice-Chair and Member, Standing Committee on Public Accounts – 2006 to 2008
  • Vice-Chair and Member of the House of Commons Sub-committee on International Human Rights – 2008 to 2020
  • National Conservative Caucus Chair — 2015 to 2019
  • Shadow Minister for International Human Rights and Religious Freedom – 2019 to 2020
  • Canada-Israel Parliamentary Friendship Group – since 2006

In his work over 14 years as a Parliamentarian, Sweet has earned a reputation for working across partisan lines and getting results.

The Conservative climate plan will hold the world’s largest greenhouse gas emitter - China - to account by implementing Carbon Border Tariffs. We won’t let the Chinese Communist Party hold the world hostage anymore over this issue!

China will laugh at us. They will never be held to account. No other country in the world would be willing to stand shoulder to shoulder with Canada when it comes to sanctions on China, everyone of them are sucking up to them. I think that more should be done on the human rights front, like expelling their diplomats until the two Michaels are released. That should be just a start.

Oh, knock it off. Stop these lock downs. We've had enough.

Thank you for this!!

Are you kidding or just dreaming in technicolour. Truturd doesn't have the guts to do it!

YES

Thanks

David, Erin O'Toole said no to carbon taxes when he was campaigning, now all in. Why is the Conservative party moving left? We need a conservative choice.

Fight climate change with a carbon tax, frequent flyer tax, and a tax on cottages? I think you and Erin O'Toole may have signed up for the wrong party... Suggest you check out the NDP or Green Party.

Now this is the topic?? Agenda.

Wake up! No one can secure environment with natural causes, they can only ensure discipline such as no littering, proper pick up of garbage, cleaning, planting trees, etc. Without risk there will be no technology, progress and improvements. We shouldn't go backwards just to satisfy impossible dreams of controlling unforeseen and natural occurrences, we need to develope our common sense and be smart. What we do is drive away jobs, wealth and resources to China and other foreign countries giving up what we perceived as controlling environment problems. Other countries won't control but produce the same we gave up without maintained processes bringing worse climate situation and controlling us with our dependence on their supplies. Remember the PPE China won't supply as leverage, until we decide to produce locally, now the vaccine....
